__What does pride mean to you? __
Pride means to me; to live authentically and be supported by people within and outside the LGBTQ community. And to support others within the LGBTQ community.
Good examples of where I feel supported are when I enjoy singing and performing with Amsterdam Gay Man’s chorus. The chorus has people from many different countries and for some it is one of the first communities where they can be themselves. We actually have a Pride Concert coming up on the 27th of July and the 31st of July. http://www.amsgmc.nl/
One thing that is really important to me, that not a lot a people know, is that three years ago I started to use the word queer instead of gay because I felt it suited me more.
Queer is an umbrella term that can encompass anyone within the LGBTQ community. For me the word queer is a world of possibilities and it allows me to share a closer identity with different members of the community. Because it’s a label of inclusivity and possibilities. It’s important for different members of the community to learn about eachother and respect the unique experiences they all face.
Using the term queer instead of for example gay or lesbian isn’t the rule for everyone but for me it works because it allows me to connect with other different people within the community.
__Do you have special pride plans?__
Not yet, to be decided;) But at Vélo I will be doing an ‘Evolution of Pride’ taking you on a musical, historical and educational journey from the 1969 Stone Wall Riot to the 50th anniversary in 2019.
Just for shits and gigs I will also be giving a ‘QUEER AF’ pride ride. I’m super excited for both.
__What was your favourite part/attribute of the photoshoot? __
That Jolien looked like a barbie with my pink sunglasses on.
__Pride to us at Vélo means accepting who you are and being proud of all you stand for. No one should ever feel like being too much while enjoying the ride. How do you incorporate this feeling of freedom in your Vélo rides?__
I’m proud to live authentically and to live authentically means to live without barriers when you’re in the box with me we ride with no barriers.
