Superfood health benefits
All the superfoods listed below are also available at our Vélo Nutrition Bar, so you can try it out and give your shake that extra kick!
Chia seeds
Don’t be fooled by the size of this superfood, despite its tiny size chia seeds are one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet. They are exceptionally high in fiber, protein, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. Another great fact is that chia seeds are really easy to incorporate into your diet. Chia seeds take up a lot of liquid and become kind of gel consistency when added to liquid. That is why we advice you to always consume it with a liquid so it won’t take up the water in your stomach and intestines. You can add it to a smoothie bowl, shakes, yoghurt or try this overnight chia & oats recipe for instance.
Flaxseed
Flaxseed is an amazing source of fiber. It is commonly advised to consume crushed flaxseed instead of whole, because it is easier to digest. The fiber in the flaxseed can stimulate your bowel movement and it can also hold on to water in your bowel which can make it easier to go to the toilet. It doesn’t have much flavour but is very easy to add to your granola our seed & nut mix to put into your yoghurt for instance.
Maca Powder
The flavour of this one can best be described as earthy and a little nutty. But you probably won’t taste it when you add it into a shake or yoghurt. This magic powder is known to balance hormones and increase libido, which is probably one of the main reasons for its fame.
Spirulina
We should honestly say, this one really stinks and does not have a great taste. But if you only add a teaspoon to your shake you will not notice the flavour while you’re still reaping the benefits. Especially the powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties make spirulina great, because it fights free radicals in the body and can really improve your skin condition.
Hempseed
This one is a great source of plant based protein and healthy essential fatty acids. It also has a nice nutty flavour and pleasant bite. You can add it to so many different foods. Like yoghurt, shakes, smoothie bowls or oats. Or sprinkle over a salad or use in date bliss balls.
