What is protein and why do we need it?

During a Vélo ride your body breaks down muscle tissue, causing small cracks in your muscles. We’ve mentioned before that your body needs protein to rebuild those muscles. But what is protein exactly?

Protein is made up of amino acids which are the building blocks for most of the cells in our body. Some of these amino acids are synthesized by the body and are called non-essential amino acids, while other amino acids that cannot be made by the body are called essential amino acids. We need to obtain these essential amino acids through our diet.

At our Vélo nutrition bar we use a cruelty free and plant-based pea protein powder in all our shakes. It’s not only great for the body but also for the environment and animals. It contains all the essential and non-essential amino acids and is very rich in BCAAs that are very important for recovery and building muscle.

So, come and try one of our signature shakes in the studio! We also have a specialty shake every month!
